OSK 2012: Challenges and opportunities in the offshore industry

The 18th annual Offshore Strategy Conference was held February 13 - 15. Recruitment and access to engineering expertise were both recurring issues in the discussion, which at the conference in Stavanger were described as the main challenge for the industry.

Day 1, Tuesday, covered issues ranging from value creation and effects from the petroleum industry to technology, access to capital and the offshore industry as the industry of the future. During day 2, topics included recruitment, competence and national and international projects.

The offshore industry has often been criticized for "stealing" the best competence. - But the offshore industry is completely dependent on the best heads in order to keep a strong market position and a technological edge, it was claimed as an answer to the criticism. 

- The conference was marked by a great atmosphere and great positivity, says GIEK's managing director Wenche Nistad, who lectured on GIEK's projects during the conference. 2011 was a record-breaking year on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, thanks to the major findings and the agreement on the Barents Sea dividing line.
