The waste is sorted using infrared light and air nozzles. The waste is predominantly household packaging materials such as cartons, bottles, paper etc. The waste is put on a conveyor belt and each object is identified by a scanner. The analysis is based on NIR spectroscopy. Light is reflected from the objects, and the system is able to identify the colour of the objects and the materials they are made of. Signals are sent to air nozzles that sort the waste into separate fractions, such as green PET bottles.
Since 1993 Tomra Sorting Solutions AS (formerly Titech AS) has delivered more than 2000 waste sorting systems to more than 37 countries and is a global leader within this business.
